Our Story

Picture

Parkdale Project Read (PPR) was founded in 1986 by Dr. Rita Cox - storyteller, community activist, and former head Librarian at the Parkdale Branch of the Toronto Public Library. Dr. Cox established a literacy program in the library after hearing parents confide that they couldn’t read to their children.

Parkdale Project Read began as volunteer driven program operating out of the Parkdale branch of the Toronto Public Library, with volunteer tutors and learners meeting every week to work on reading and writing. Now Parkdale Project Read operates a vibrant learning centre at King & Dufferin, maintaining its roots as a community-based and volunteer driven organization.
