September is Literacy Month across the country, and to celebrate, Parkdale Project Read has partnered with local businesses to raise funds and promote literacy across Toronto. 

According to Statistics Canada, over 40% of all Canadians need help with literacy. This means at least 2 out of every 5 adults in Canada cannot read well enough to do everyday tasks like paying bills or writing emails.

At Parkdale Project Read, we are committed to supporting learners with their individual literacy goals, while also promoting community development and social justice. 99% of all learners who complete our programs meet their literacy goals, moving on to better employment and becoming more engaged, independent members of their communities.

This Literacy Month, you can support Parkdale Project Read by visiting the following local businesses throughout the month of September:

Another Story Bookshop (315 Roncesvalles Ave.) has a QR code at their till for the month of September, enabling donations to PPR.

Honey's Ice Cream (1448 Dundas St. W.) has a QR code at their till for the month of September, enabling donations to PPR.

Flying Books (784 College St.) has bookmarks with QR codes to donate at their till for the month of September.

Morning Parade Coffee Bar (256 Crawford St.) is donating the proceeds from the sale of donated books for the month of September. If you have books to donate, up to two, please drop them by!

Mosaic Yoga (225 Sterling Road – Unit 23), is donating the proceeds from every Karma class held during the month of September to PPR. Classes are held at Mosaic’s Sterling location every Sunday from 10:00-11:00am.

Pandemonium Books and Discs (2920 Dundas St. W.) has a QR code at their till for the month of September, enabling donations to PPR.

​Type Books (883 Queen St. W.) is asking customers to tack a donation to Parkdale Project Read on to their purchases for the month of September.  They also have a QR code at the till.

Can't make it out to one of these local businesses? Consider making a donation directly to Parkdale Project Read (linked here). Most online donations qualify for a charitable tax receipt.

Belong to a book club?  Consider organizing a book club fundraiser for PPR this Literacy Month. How does it work?

1. Sign up on Canada Helps (linked here) to create a fundraising page for your book club.
2. Set a goal for your fundraising efforts and get some ideas from our Fundraising toolkit (linked here).
3. Get fundraising! Here a couple of ideas how:
   1. Host your next book club meeting and ask for donations in lieu of snacks!
   2. Share the fundraising page with your book club and tell them why you care about PPR. Ask them to share it and the work of PPR with their networks.
