Wendy Tanner Memorial Fund

Wendy Tanner was a beloved friend, colleague, and mentor who passed away in June 2020 at the age of 67. This is a link to her online memorial site.

Wendy worked at Project Read from 1997 to 2000. She was a life-long educator and social justice activist, who loved working with literacy students.

Wendy also loved to sing, sew, dance, go to movies and plays, and realized how the arts enrich our lives and feed our learning.

In respectful consultation with Wendy's loved ones, Parkdale Project Read established the Wendy Tanner Memorial Fund for Arts and Literacy in 2020 to honour Wendy's life and and celebrate her contributions to the adult literacy community.

This fund will support adult literacy learning through arts-based  activities and projects. PPR learners will explore new ways of expressing themselves through workshops led by artists and have access art materials and other resources.

Highlights:
In 2021, the Wendy Tanner Memorial Fund for Arts and Literacy Fund supported PPR learner Nancy Dixon to publish her autobiography, Standing in My Rightful Place about her experiences growing up in Africville, a small community of predominantly Black Canadians that was once located in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

In 2021, PPR hosted a monthly series of Healing Song Circles and Teachings with Aqua Nibii Waawaaskone (drummer, singer and storyteller) with support from the Wendy Tanner Memorial Fund for Arts and Literacy Fund.
