Queer Language in the Classroom

1/10/2022

Picture
We are excited to continue our Professional Development Sessions for Tutors with a session on Queer Language in the Classroom.

In this training, we will focus on a basic overview of queer terminology and how it applies to adult literacy work. We will also share some methods for introducing a more inclusive curriculum into your classroom or tutoring sessions. This training is designed for tutors and facilitators but it will be helpful for everyone.

Queer Language in the Classroom

This program is presented by the West TO Literacy Collaborative and with guest facilitator: Keighty Ward, Literacy Works.

About Literacy Works
Literacy Works promotes literacy justice and communication equity. Founded on principles of popular education, we support a membership of community-based adult literacy programs across Illinois, Chicago and beyond. We also work closely with mission-driven organizations to prioritize clear, effective communication in our communities so people can access information they need to thrive. We:

 - Bolster adult literacy through capacity building and professional development, supporting a heavily volunteer field
 - Support organizations across sectors to communicate clearly and effectively through our Clear Language Lab
 - Raise up adult literacy issues to advance equitable access to education and systems such as health, early childhood, legal aid, and more

About the Facilitator
Keighty (they/them) began their work as an educational ASL (American Sign Language) interpreter and quickly became interested in the teaching they were interpreting. They taught English as a Second Language for three years, while pursuing their M.A in Applied Linguistics. Their thesis focused on d/Deaf adult English learners, which led them to become interested in adult education specifically. They have presented at several conferences about adult education and have mentored many new presenters to do the same. Through their work they hope to help make education accessible and equal for all who seek it.  In their spare time, Keighty loves to grow vegetables, practice art making, or watch their cats run around in the yard.
